Mahmudur Rahman Manna, president of Nagorika Oikya, said that the presence of voters in the first phase of the Upazila Parishad elections proved that the people are not with the government.
He said this at a sit-in program organized by the ‘Civil Rights Movement’ in front of the National Press Club on Friday (May 10) at noon. The sit-in program was held to protest the increase in electricity, fuel oil and railway fares and to demand the release of royal prisoners including Khaleda Zia.
Mahmudur Rahman Manna said, people did not vote for this government, they still do not vote. You have seen that the first phase of the upazila election has been completed. In the history of Bangladesh, there have never been so few votes in the upazila election. It is written in official accounts of votes, newspapers and magazines.
He said, yesterday (Thursday), the Prime Minister said in his speech in Parliament, “I don’t care about anything, the people are with me”. What do these people mean? Are there any people with you? Why don’t they go to vote if they are together? Honestly, your team members are not with you either. If there was, they would have gone to vote on January 7, they would have gone to vote in the upazila elections.
The president of Nagarik Oikya said that the government cannot control the price of daily commodities and cannot reduce the price of electricity. The amount of foreign debt is now more than 100 billion dollars. To repay the loan money, the Economic Council meeting was held again. If there are countries outside, who have promised to give us money, if they give us money soon, then maybe we will be saved. And if not, the government will not be able to repay any money. It seems that there is actually a government in the country?
He said that the government has no money to import from abroad. What to do after May? Can you increase the reserve? Expats from abroad are sending money to the country. That money is not going to the government. They know that it is not safe to send money to the government. So, they send money differently. There is no more opportunity to increase our exports.
Mahmudur Rahman Manna claimed that it is not the opposition party but the government that has become weak. Those who think that the opposition party has become weak and the government has become stronger, tell them to look at the economic picture of the country. The opposition has not weakened, we are all in our party. When I am calling, people are coming on the street. Wait, soon people will take to the streets again. And I say to the people, if you want to ease your suffering, it will not happen with this government. It has taken away votes, increased the price of things, increased the burden of debt on your- my head. So, this government has to be removed, there is no compromise with them. The heat is decreasing little by little. We’re thinking we’ll hit the road in a bigger way as the heat cools down. Let’s see what happens in the end.
Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP Supreme Court Lawyers Association President Mahbub Uddin Khokon said that BNP Chairperson is the most popular leader of the country. Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has been detained in a false case. He is very sick. It is his constitutional right to receive medical treatment. He is being denied that right.
He said that the government has blocked Begum Khaleda Zia’s medical treatment for the sake of law. I will tell the law minister, don’t mislead the people. Arrange for him to go abroad, otherwise the people will answer for your revenge one day.
Joint Secretary General of BNP Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said that the railway fare has been increased suddenly. No one asked anything. Suddenly you will see the price of oil, petrol price, octane price increased. Suddenly, you will see that the price of gas has increased. Earlier public hearing was held in Energy Regulatory Commission. We used to go on behalf of BNP. Now that public hearing system has also been stopped.
