In the first days of June, Halki will take delivery of the new electric boat sponsored by “Papastratos”, as part of the GR-eco islands initiative.

It is a 10-meter electric boat that will be able to carry 12 passengers at a maximum speed of 8 miles, drawing its energy from the sun, through integrated photovoltaic panels, as well as direct power supply.

Its design is based on traditional Greek architecture and the hulling is done by “Xylonafigiki” a family business based in Patmos. The vessel will be made available and will serve the needs of the tourist sea movements of the ChalkiON Energy Community.

“The construction of the boat was done from scratch and is even more modern than the one piloted to the island at the opening of Gr-eco Islands by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis” declares in “d” the mayor of Chalkis Angelos Fragakis, who expressed his thanks to the “Papastratos” who donated the boat to the island, as part of the company’s initiatives to promote sustainable development practices.

“Green” energy combined with “green” transport, both on land and at sea by electric boat, are included in the package of actions that make up the GR-eco initiative, which runs in Halki, but will be extended to more small islands of of the Aegean, as the Project was deemed particularly successful in the sustainable direction of the island, much more so in the substantial support of its inhabitants.

“Soon there will be the possibility of expanding the ChalkiON Energy Community by our fellow citizens who, for various reasons, either out of ignorance, or out of reaction or even by those who fought the idea, to participate in the E.K. and benefit from the almost zero electricity charges” emphasizes Mr. Fragakis.

It is noted that the Energy Community ensures its members a reduction or zero electricity charges, with the method of offsetting the energy they consume with that produced by the 1 megawatt photovoltaic park which is a donation from PPC. The benefit is estimated at a total of 180,000-250,000 euros per year, while the “green” energy from the photovoltaic replaces the oil production of electricity from the Rhodes units, resulting in a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 1,800 tons per year.
