Ascension Day and Father’s Day – how are they connected?

Ascension of Christ In the Christian faith, refers to the acceptance and exaltation of Jesus Christ as the Son of God to his Father in heaven. Ascension Day is celebrated on the 40th day of Easter, 39 days after Easter Sunday. That’s why the festival always falls on a Thursday. Ascension Day has been a public holiday throughout Germany since 1934.

The Ascension of Christ was already celebrated with a holiday in early Christian times. Already in the old Roman Creed, which preceded today’s Apostles’ Creed of the Catholic Church, reference was made to the “ascendit in caelum” (ascended into heaven) in the year 325.

In order to visually show people the Ascension, Christ figures were and are pulled up through a hole in the church ceiling, especially in some regions of southern Germany and Austria. Otherwise, the festival is traditional in many places Church services and processions celebrated outdoors.

Many people also associate the holiday with happy trips to the Father’s Day, where groups of men set off with handcarts and beer kegs. The actual origin of Father’s Day cannot be precisely determined. It is assumed that different traditions have mixed. There are certainly indications that the hustle and bustle on Father’s Day could have arisen from the customs surrounding Ascension Day. Church chronicles reveal that as early as the 17th century, many an Ascension procession ended in a drinking bout.

Since the 19th century, so-called “Ham Tours”: Haulage contractors organized horse-drawn excursions into the countryside. Women were not allowed in these men’s games. It is known from the Berlin area that groups of mostly single men – there were many of them in Berlin around 1900 – went on trips every year on Ascension Day.

Even during GDR times, the tradition of “Herrentag” lived on in and around Berlin, although Ascension Day was abolished as a public holiday in the GDR in 1967.
