When the firefighters-rescuers arrived at the scene, thick smoke was coming from under the roof of the house, and a flame could already be seen in one corner of the roof. It is believed that this is the place where the fire started.
While the firefighters climbed onto the roof and extinguished the fire, the owner of the part of the house where the fire started in the attic, who told her relatives about the accident on the phone, believed that the cause of the fire was the electrical installation.

The fire in the attic was extinguished in 10 minutes, but the firefighters worked on the roof for more than an hour: they peeled off the plastic outdoor signs, cut the wall and threw the debris on the ground.
According to D. Kunigėlis, the firefighters-rescuers must remove the source of the fire: “If even a small spark remains somewhere, the fire can flare up again. We must prevent this by eliminating all possibilities. We will stay awake for a while, but the residents of the house themselves must be very alert and monitor the situation at this time of day.”
During the fire, a large area of the shelter was burned, part of the first floor was melted, which, according to one of the owners of the house, the neighbors had recently installed.

The man said that the neighbor saw the fire herself: “I just saw her running to the electrical panel behind the house. Maybe the electricity went out when they shorted it?! Then I look – the fire brigade is coming, I think – who is here? And I see – the roof is on fire. I still wanted to climb up to look, but he shouts: don’t climb up, because you won’t get up, you’re suffocating”.
The interviewer said that only the neighbor suffered losses, in whose part the fire broke out, and neither the fire nor the water touched his living area: there was only a lot of smoke in the room.
While the fire extinguishing work was going on, the intersection of Laivės-Kaunas streets was temporarily closed, because the firemen had the opportunity to connect to the water hydrant only on Kaunos street, near the dormitory.
