The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya announced, “The European authorities continue to intercept illegal immigrants in the name of war, and forcibly return them to Libya.”
The Foundation said in a statement: “The policies of repelling and intercepting migrant boats in the open Mediterranean, forcibly returning them to Libya, and keeping them there, despite the potential risks to their safety and lives resulting from their forced return to Libya, are still continuing.”
She added, “Despite the UN and international warnings and demands to stop forcibly returning boats of irregular migrants to Libya, considering that Libya is an unsafe country, and the safety of migrants there is at risk.”
In a related context, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that “265 migrants were intercepted in the Mediterranean, from April 28 to May 4, and forcibly returned to Libya by Coast Guard forces.”
She pointed out that “with this measure, the total number of migrants who were forcibly returned to Libya during the year 2024 will rise to 5,207 migrants.”
