The Appeals Prosecutor’s Office of Athens filed an appeal for the entire first-instance decision regarding the deadly fires in Mati and the surrounding areas, in the summer of 2018, which caused a lot of reactions.
According to information, almost all the accused will sit again on the bench of the appellate court, i.e. the 21 acquitted and five of the six convicted. The only exception was the elderly man convicted of starting the fire, who was sentenced to 3 years in prison, a non-appealable sentence.
In particular, with regard to the convicted, both the prison sentences imposed (from 3 years to 111 years) and the mitigations granted to some of them will be examined. Finally, the court’s decision to convert the imposed penalties into redeemable for 10 euros per day will also be reviewed.
Now, the Greek Judiciary is called upon to write down the first-instance decision as quickly as possible in order for the procedures to move quickly to avoid the possibility of statute of limitations.
