Two Lithuanian representatives – I. Navakauskas and Artūras Seja – started in the single kayak 200 m distance. Both Lithuanians successfully passed Saturday’s qualification and qualified for one swim of the semi-finals.
In the semi-final held on Sunday morning, I. Navakauskas became the winner (34.92 seconds), A. Seja finished second (35.3 seconds), and this opened the way for them to the final, among the top nine.
In the final, I. Navakauskas covered the distance in 34.32 seconds. and won the gold medal. The winner beat the Polish Jakub Stepunas, who remained in second place, by 0.26 seconds. Portugal’s Messias Baptista, who won the bronze, lost to the champion by 0.42 seconds. A. Seja was one step away from the podium – in fourth place (34.96 seconds).
Henrikas Žustautas won another medal for the Lithuanian national team on Saturday, winning silver in the 200 m single canoe event.
Having won two medals – gold and silver, the Lithuanian national team took 10th place in the team standings. Athletes from 57 countries took part in the first round of the World Cup competition, and medals were won by representatives of 21 national teams.
The hosts of the competition, Hungary, won the most medals – 4 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze.
The Chinese national team took second place – 3 gold and 1 bronze, the third place was shared by the New Zealand and Australian national teams, which won 2 gold and 1 silver award each.
In the first round of the World Cup competition, the Lithuanian crews starting at the Paris Olympic Games also started the international competition season.
Simonas Maldonis, Mindaugas Maldonis, Ignas Navakauskas and Artūras Seja reached the final in the four-man kayak 500 m competition and won 5th place.
M. Maldonis and Andrejus Olijniks took 8th place in the final of the double kayak 500 m event.
