Garib Rath was started in the country on October 5, 2006. That day, for the first time, Garib Rath Express train was dispatched from Saharsa Junction in Bihar to Amritsar. Its number is 12203 and 12204. Now LHB coaches with German technology will be installed in this train. These coaches were imported from Germany to be fitted in Rajdhani Express.

The timing of these trains was almost like that of Rajdhani Express. That is why not only the poor but also the rich climb it with great enthusiasm. The first train of this series ran on October 5, 2006. After that many trains have been run in this series.

Actually, at present about two dozen Garib Rath trains are running in the country. But the first Garib Rath train of the country was the train running between Saharsa and Amritsar. However, initially its route used to go from Saharsa to Amritsar via Hajipur, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Ambala Cantt. Later its route was changed to Ambala via New Delhi.

Now coaches with German technology are being installed in this train. These coaches are called HHB coaches. These coaches were earlier imported from Germany. Later it started being made in India itself. Initially these coaches were imported to fit in Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express. Now only LHB coaches are being installed in all trains.

When will German coaches be installed?

According to a notification issued recently from the office of Chief Passenger Transportation Manager (CPTM) of East Central Railway, LHB rakes will be added to 12204 Garib Rath leaving from Amritsar from August 7, 2024. These racks will be added to 12203 Garib Rath train departing from Saharsa from August 8, 2024. After that the passengers of this train will enjoy these coaches only.

LHB coach will increase seating capacity

At present 12203/04 Saharsa Amritsar Garib Rath Express has 13 AC 3 Tier, 4 AC Chair Car and 2 Generator coaches. It does not have a pantry car coach. When LHB coaches will be installed in this train, the AC chair car coaches will be removed. Meaning there will be 20 AC three tier economy coaches and two generator cum guard coaches. With this, a train will have a seating capacity of 1600 passengers.

1523 kilometers in 30 hours

Currently, 12203 Saharsa Amritsar Garib Rath Express covers distance of 1,723 km (1,071 mi) in 30 hrs 00 mins (57.43 km/hr). In return journey it means 12204 Amritsar Saharsa Garib Rath Express (58.08 km/hr) covers this distance in 29 hrs 40 mins. Since the average speed of this train is above 55 km/h (34 mph), as per Indian Railways rules, its fare includes a Superfast surcharge.

12203 Saharsa Amritsar Garib Rath Express departs Saharsa Junction at 15:00 hrs IST every Monday, Thursday & Sunday and reaches Amritsar Junction at 21:00 hrs IST the next day. In return, 12204 Amritsar Saharsa Garib Rath Express departs Amritsar Junction at 04:30 hrs IST every Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday and reaches Saharsa Junction at 10:10 hrs IST the next day.
