Last month, a trade agreement was reached to give up Kwak Myung-woo and receive Cha Young-seok and rookie picks.
The trade between OK Financial Group and Hyundai Capital was canceled due to the guilty verdict of Kwak Myeong-woo (33), setter of OK Financial Group in the men’s professional volleyball division.
According to the OK Financial Group team on the 13th, Kwak Myung-woo was recently sentenced by the court to six months in prison, one year of suspension, and one year of probation for violating the Communications Secrets Protection Act and causing injury.
An OK Financial Group official said, “We recently learned that the player was found guilty, and a confirmation process was necessary. “It is difficult to give details because it is a personal matter for the player,” he said. “It was in the final stage after the trade agreement was reached, and it had not been announced. “After the ruling was issued, we requested the Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) to withdraw the trade announcement,” he said.
On the 19th of last month, OK Financial Group agreed to a trade to lose Kwak Myung-woo to Hyundai Capital and receive middle blocker (fast attack) Cha Young-seok and a first-round pick in the 2024-2025 season rookie draft.
However, upon learning that Kwak Myung-woo had been found guilty by the court, OK Financial Group withdrew its trade with Hyundai Capital.
Kwak Myung-woo, who joined OK Financial Group as the first pick in the second round of the 2013-2014 season’s rookie draft, performed key duties for the team in the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons and contributed to the team’s two consecutive championship wins.
Last season, he participated in 34 games (126 sets) and contributed to the team’s runner-up finish in the championship game by demonstrating side blocking and stable game management using his height.
It appears that Kwak Myung-woo will not be able to avoid disciplinary action.
According to Chapter 3, Article 10, Paragraph 1 of the KOVO Reward and Punishment Regulations, ‘Severe social crimes such as sexual crimes (including sexual harassment), violence, drunk driving, illegal drugs, gambling, match-fixing, racial discrimination, school violence that occurred in the past, human rights violations, etc. Any member who commits an act that damages dignity for a similar reason is subject to disciplinary action.
KOVO officials who completed the 2024 foreign player tryout held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on the 11th will return to Korea on the 14th.
A KOVO official said, “We will discuss the matter after assessing the situation in Korea.”
