BOLZANO. The Northern Lights which were observed in many parts of the world during the night between Friday 10 May and Saturday 11 May were also visible in the Dolomites of Trentino-Alto Adige. Sharing a shot of the Ortles was the meteorologist of the Province of Bolzano Dieter Peterlin. “The Northern Lights are now also visible in South Tyrol, sometimes even with the naked eye! A very rare sight in our latitudes,” Peterlin wrote on social media.

The Aurora Borealis manifests itself as colored lights that appear in the night sky due to the encounter between protons and electrons emitted by the Sun and nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. It is a phenomenon usually visible in the polar areas (in Antarctica we speak of the southern lights) and in the regions closest to the Poles.
