Hundreds of opponents demonstrated in Tunisia, “to demand the release of journalists, activists, and opposition figures from prisons.”
According to Reuters, the protesters demanded “setting a date for holding fair presidential elections in a favorable political climate that includes putting an end to restrictions imposed on press and political freedoms.”
Imad Al-Khamiri, a leader in the Ennahda movement and a member of the Salvation Front, which is organizing the protest, said: “Today there is no climate for fair elections and no date at all. The authority is suppressing politicians, lawyers, and journalists.”
He added: “The storming of the lawyers’ headquarters is a dangerous precedent that perpetuates the authoritarian regime.”
The regional branch of lawyers in Tunisia had previously announced, “entering into a regional general strike starting on Monday, May 13, and suspending work in all major Tunisian courts, against the backdrop of the suspension of lawyer Sania Dahmani,” demanding “her immediate release.”
The spokesman for the Tunisian Court of First Instance, Mohamed Zaitouneh, stated, “The subpoena issued by the first investigating judge of the Tunis First Instance, against Sunia Dahmani, was implemented due to statements that were considered offensive to the country and the state.” The spokesman for the Public Prosecution in Tunisia, Mohamed Zaitouneh, also announced, “It has been executed.” Suspension of two program presenters on “IFM” radio, Burhan Bseis and Murad Al-Zughidi.
