The European Union announced the adoption of a law aimed at reducing heavy vehicle emissions in member states and imposing strict emissions rules on these vehicles.
The “Green Future” website, which specializes in sustainable development and awareness of the harms of climate change and the importance of agriculture, stated that the new law aims to reduce pollution and carbon emissions resulting from trucks and buses, as the emissions of heavy vehicles weighing more than 16 tons will be reduced by 45 percent as of 2030, and 65 percent as of 2035.
According to the law, the emissions of heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses that will be sold starting in 2040 must be 90 percent lower, and starting in 2030, 90 percent of the buses sold and operating within the cities of European Union countries must have “zero” emissions, starting in 2035. They must all be emissions-free, and intercity buses will be exempt from this law.
Starting in 2035, these targets will also apply to trucks, buses and various other vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tons.
Heavy vehicles produce a quarter of Europe’s road transport emissions and most trucks on European roads currently run on diesel, which produces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants linked to lung cancer and respiratory diseases.
