The former head of the United Nations mission in Libya, Abdullah Batili, accused the main players in the country of “monopolizing the political process” and said that during the past transitional stages, they “continued to compete and were not really interested in the stability of the country.”

According to Batelli, a solution cannot be reached in Libya as long as this situation continues, adding in an interview published on the United Nations website yesterday, Monday, “We saw how happy they (political leaders) are with the situation in which they can share the fruits of governance among themselves.”

In reference to the level of corruption in Libya, Patelli pointed out that Libya is not a poor country, but in fact, it is a very rich country, producing 1.3 million barrels of oil per day, and there are enough resources for every Libyan to live in prosperity, but what we have seen is that the average Libyan It has been impoverished in the past ten years.

Batelli confirmed the existence of the concept of transparency in Libya and said, “There is no transparency, and the Libyans talk about corruption in the government, and when you look at the situation in the education sector and the health sector, you see the devastation left by the wars, and the infrastructure has not been rebuilt.”

Batelli warned of what he called a new type of interest in “Libya’s geopolitical location” from regional and international powers, as a result of international and regional crises, including the war in Ukraine.

Regarding the spread of armed groups and heavy weapons in the capital, Tripoli, Batelli said, “We all know that Libya today is almost like an open supermarket (store) for weapons that are used for internal political competition between armed groups, and also in arms deals, arms races, and arms trade with their neighbors and beyond.” “.

As Batelli describes, Libya has increasingly become “a mafia state dominated by a number of groups involved in many smuggling operations, including human trafficking, minerals such as gold, and drug smuggling.”
