Earlier today, reports were received by Ashkelon residents at the Ashkelon Municipality’s municipal call center and at the Association of Cities for the Environment, Ashkelon District, with complaints about a pungent odor, especially in the Agamim neighborhood near the EPA facility.

After a comprehensive inspection of the municipality’s and the union’s environmental drives, which arrived at the EPA’s facilities, a leak was discovered in the company’s fuel tank.

The municipality and the union say that during the inspection at the EPA compound, a shovel was observed which covered the wet soil in the hazardous area and that only after the union’s environmental drives entered the site, did the Ministry of Environmental Protection report the leak.

“The municipality acted quickly and resolutely after receiving the residents’ complaints,” said Tomer Glam, mayor of Ashkelon. “We will not allow the EPA to endanger the health of the residents and disgracefully ignore the usual procedure. The health and quality of life of Ashkelon residents is not neglected, we will continue to stand guard and stand up for our residents’ right to healthy air in the relevant Knesset committee and the Minister of Environmental Protection.”

Meital Amitai, Director General of the Association of Cities for the Environment, Ashkelon District: “We take the incident and the recurring incidents that occur in the EPA very seriously. What is worse is the EPA’s lack of reporting on the leak. “We see this as an attempt to hide the damage and environmental hazard. This is a dangerous situation and harms the credibility of the EPA, this is a problematic conduct that must be addressed. We will continue to act to prevent such incidents and of course we will turn to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.”

EPA said in a response earlier today: “As part of an ongoing operation, a small amount of fuel was leaked from one of the drainage tanks today. According to the practice, the fuel was pumped, treated and the condition returned to normal within a short time. The company reported to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and relevant authorities. It must be emphasized that the odors do not pose a danger to public health. “
