The Karnataka High Court will hear a petition filed by students challenging the hijab restrictions on educational institutions in Karnataka tomorrow. There was also no interim order in the petitioners’ demand that they be allowed to wear the hijab on Friday.

The Karnataka High Court has issued an interim order banning students from wearing religious attire until a verdict is reached on the hijab. Students and parents have come out to demand an online class after the hijab ban was tightened. Educational institutions, which had been closed for five days due to clashes over the hijab ban, will reopen on Monday. Police have imposed a curfew near campuses in the southern district until February 19 to quell tensions.

The Opposition is likely to question the BJP government on the issue in the Assembly session starting on Monday. Decisive days are coming in Karnataka regarding hijab. Officials said the decision to allow students in Udupi to wear the hijab in non-uniformed schools and colleges would help reduce tensions over the issue. Uniforms are not mandatory for colleges under the State Department of Graduate Education. But some government colleges make uniforms mandatory and adhere to the dress code. Earlier, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had said that district officials, police and school administrations have been directed to hold peace committee meetings on the issue.
