Women driving bullet trains in Saudi Arabia. The ad, which invited applications for 30 vacancies, received 28,000 applications. Officials say the sector is making progress as more opportunities are opened up for women in the country.

Saudi Arabia has been opening up a number of opportunities for women since 2018, when they were allowed to drive. The share of women in the workforce has increased by 33% in the last 5 years.

30 eligible women will be selected. Elections will be completed by mid-March. They will start running bullet trains between Makkah and Madinah after one year of paid training. All 80 men will be hired as drivers.

Renfe, a Spanish railway operator, said about half of them had dropped out of an online assessment based on their academic background and English language proficiency. Until now, women in Saudi Arabia have been restricted to teaching and health care.
