Devotees bathing in the Masimaka Tirthavari Mahamaka pool in Kumbakonam

Thanjavur: Thousands of devotees took a holy bath at the Tirthawari held at the Kumbakonam Mahamaka pool yesterday.
The Masi Maga festival in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district, started on Feb. 8 with flag hoisting at six Shiva temples including Adikumbeswarar. On the fifth day of the 10-day festival, there was an olay sap and on the ninth day there was a procession. The main event took place at Tirthwari. Adikumbeswarar, from 12 Shiva temples including Kasiviswanathar, arose in Rishabha vehicles, along with Swami – Ambal Panchamoorthy, on the four banks of the Mahamaka pool. Tirthavari was found in the Mahamaka pool, specially anointed with turmeric, milk and sandalwood for the Astra deities of the respective temples.

Thousands of devotees took holy baths in the evening. Similarly, the Therottam took place at the Chakrapani temple, the Vaishnava site.

When the Thanjavur Commodity DIG, Kayalvizhi, SB, Ravalipriya both went down to the pool for Swami Darshan, on the north bank, the Sivacharyas and devotees were dissatisfied as the police did not let anyone inside.
