Chennai: The Chennai High Court has banned the recording companies from using songs composed by composer Ilayaraja.
Ilayaraja, a well-known composer, sued in the High Court, saying, ‘Even after the contract was finalized, the songs I composed were used by companies, including Echo and Aki Music, without obtaining copyright. It should be banned, ‘he demanded.
A separate High Court judge hearing the case had ruled that the recording companies had the right to use songs composed by Ilayaraja. Ilayaraja filed an appeal against this order. The petition came up for hearing in a session comprising Justices M. Thuraisamy and Tamilchelvi.
Senior Advocate Satish Parasaran and Advocate A. Saravanan appeared for the petitioner. The Division Bench directed the concerned music companies to respond to the appeal, restraining the order of the separate judge. The trial was adjourned to March 21.
