In Ranipettai district, 72.24 per cent votes were cast in the urban local body elections held in 6 municipalities and 8 municipalities.

Urban local elections

In Ranipettai district, local government elections were held yesterday in 6 municipalities viz.

Voting began at 7 a.m. for a total of 288 wards, including 168 wards in the municipality and 120 wards in the municipality. Voters stood in long queues and cast their ballots.

Electronic voting machines were checked in the presence of candidates and their agents before polling began.

Polling time, which started sluggishly in the morning in most places, was in full swing as time went on.

Repair of machinery

Polling machines were repaired at a few polling stations. Immediately informed and the machinery checked.

Then followed by voting. In some places there were minor disputes and arguments between the political parties.

It was detained by election officials and police. No large-scale untoward incidents took place.

72.24 per cent turnout

Out of 3 lakh 34 thousand 45 voters across the district, 2 lakh 41 thousand 325 had cast their votes. This is 72.24 percent.

The turnout was 62.20 per cent in Arakkonam, 72.89 per cent in Arcot, 64.95 per cent in Melvisharam, 73.39 per cent in Ranipettai, 71.73 per cent in Cholingar and 76.57 per cent in Walaja.

Similarly, in Ammur municipality 83.91 per cent, in the compound municipality 82.24 per cent, in Kaveripakkam municipality 79.16 per cent, in Nemili municipality 81.64 per cent, in Takkolam municipality 82.12 per cent, in Thiri municipality 83.9 per cent, in Vilapakkam municipality the turnout was 85.95 per cent.

Collector inspection

Votes cast in 74 polling booths for 36 wards under Arakkonam Municipality are counted at Arakkonam Krishna Engineering College.

District Election Officer and Collector Bhaskar Pandian inspected the ballot box safe and counting rooms at the counting center.

Arakkonam Municipal Commissioner and Returning Officer Latha were with him at the time.
