Armless and legless Syrian boy underwent surgery in Italy

by time news

A Syrian boy who was born without arms and legs underwent surgery at a hospital in Siena on Saturday. The surgery on six-year-old Mustafa lasted three hours and was successful, the hospital director said. The child had arrived in Italy with his parents and two sisters in January thanks to a photo that has become an icon of the tragedy of the war in Syria and has gone around the world.

In the picture “Hardship of Life” Mustafa and his father Munzir Al-Nazzal can be seen. The father lost a leg in the Syrian conflict. In the photo you can see him swinging his son. The picture won the Siena International Photo Award and caused quite a stir.

Mustafa’s family is currently being cared for in an apartment provided by Caritas of the Archdiocese of Siena. The father and son will then be treated at a prosthesis center, according to organizers of the Siena International Photo Awards, which honored Turkish photographer Mehmet Aslan’s photo of Munzir and Mustafa. The festival itself launched a fundraising campaign to help father and son and other victims of the conflict in Syria.

The archdiocese said the family was being provided with food and money. Caritas has set up a local network to promote the integration process of the family and to enable accompaniment and teaching of the Italian language.
