Chandigarh: The turnout in the Punjab Assembly elections was 64.27 per cent. In the 3rd phase of elections held in Uttar Pradesh, 57.58% votes were recorded.

Elections to Punjab’s 117 Assembly constituencies were held yesterday in a single phase. Voting was sluggish in the morning in various districts of the state. However in the afternoon a large number of voters gathered at the polling station. As a result, the vote share increased significantly. As of 5 pm, 64.27 percent of the vote had been cast.

Punjab Chief Minister Saranjit Singh cast his vote at the Center in the Karar constituency. Former First Lady Punjab Amarinder Singh, the leader of the Lok Congress, cast his vote at the Center in Patiala.

Amritsar East constituency Akali Dal candidate Bikram Singh Majida told reporters that “the decision to form an alliance with the BJP will be taken after the assembly elections.”

Akali Dal volunteers staged a protest at Jalandhar’s Rainak Bazaar polling station accusing the ruling Congress of malpractice. There was a scuffle between them and the Congress. Security forces dispersed the crowd with light beatings.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Lap Singh’s car was ambushed by Congress volunteers in Punjab’s Badar constituency. The Akali Dal and Congress volunteers clashed in the Babu Singh Colony in Patiala. Conflicts erupted in various places like this.

57.58% turnout in UP

Uttar Pradesh is going to the polls in 7 phases. The state went to the polls in the third phase for 59 constituencies.

Voting also took place in the Karhal constituency where Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav is contesting. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, his wife Dimple and Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav cast their votes at the CB polling booth.

In the Kanpur area, tensions erupted there as BJP agents demanded the removal of the hijab of Muslim women who had come to the Hudson polling station. The security forces compromised between the two sides and made the voting run smoothly.

The biggest clash took place between Samajwadi Party and BJP volunteers in Smriti village in Babina constituency. Many of them were injured.

Volunteers from both parties clashed in other areas as well.
