BELLUNO. The Cima Vallona massacre, which occurred in the Val Comelico area, in the province of Belluno, was commemorated yesterday, Sunday 30 June. 57 years ago, it saw the death of four soldiers in a terrorist attack believed to be of Tyrolean independence origin, attributed to German and Austrian militants.
Also remembering the fallen soldiers were the senator and Veneto coordinator of Fratelli d’Italia, Luca De Carlo, and the vice president of the autonomous province of Bolzano, Marco Galateo.
“Finally – comments De Carlo – we were able to once again register the participation of a member of the provincial administration of Bolzano: the heavy absence of an institutional representation of Alto Adige that we have long been denouncing has therefore been filled. I thank Galateo for his presence, which represents a great signal towards awareness. Having honored the fallen together – he concludes – is an important step towards sharing the historical truth and condemning a violent past”.
Responsibility for the tragic attack was attributed to the BAS (Befreiungsausschuss Südtirol, Committee for the Liberation of South Tyrol), a terrorist group that was responsible for numerous violent acts in the 1950s and 1960s.
One of the bloodiest was the killing of four soldiers and the wounding of a fifth with explosive traps in Cima Vallona, a municipality of San Nicolò di Comelico.
The massacre took place on June 25, 1967: terrorists knocked down a high voltage pylon and killed the captain of the Carabinieri Francis Gentilecommander of a special unit for the fight against terrorism in South Tyrol, the second lieutenant of the army Mario From Leccecommander of an anti-sabotage unit, Sergeant Golden Olivebomb disposal expert of a special anti-sabotage unit, and the Alpine soldier Armando Pivaradio operator. Sergeant Marcello Fagnani was injured.
For this and other attacks carried out between August 1966 and August 1967, the Assize Court of Florence sentenced four terrorists, three Germans and one of Austrian nationality, to life imprisonment for massacre.
