UNAM will celebrate Rosario Castellanos’ legacy with a reissue and an award

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) announced that, to commemorate the Mexican poet Rosario Castellanos half a century after her death in 2024 and 100 years after her birth in 2025, it will reissue Letters to Richard and they will launch the Letters to Rosario Epistolary Literature Awardin coordination with UNAM Literature and the FFyL.

“Rosario Castellanos is considered one of the most important voices of Mexican literature of the 20th century and a key figure in the exploration of feminism, identity, discrimination and social relations“, points out the statement published in the UNAM Gazette.

The reissue of Letters to Richard will happen in 30 years”from his first and only publication” in 1994 under the seal of the National Council for Culture and the Arts, and will be integrated into the collection Vengeances. Novel and memorywhich has already published authors such as Luisa Josefina Hernandez, Maria Luisa Mendoza, Tita Valencia, Tununa Mercado, Marcela del Rio, Maria Luisa Puga, Dulce Maria Loynaz, among others. It will also feature an introduction by the poet Sara Uribea prologue to Elena Pniatowska and the introduction to the first edition, written by Juan Antonio Ascencio.

Taking Rosario’s epistolary literature as inspiration, “the call for the award arose,” the bulletin notes, “to remember his legacy and celebrate his work“It is headed by the General Directorate of Publications and Editorial Promotion, the Directorate of Literature and Reading Promotion and the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and invites students between 30 and 40 years old who are enrolled in any campus belonging to the UNAM.”to present a text of epistolary genre addressed to Rosario Castellanos in Memorial”.

The call indicates that the letter must be original, unpublished and written in Spanish, and must be no longer than 100 words. minimum of three and maximum of five pages letter size and should highlight how the work and legacy of the author of Family album (1971) has influenced the life of each participant. Letters will be received until 3:00 p.m. next Monday September 2nd of the current year.
