“At this very difficult time, we believe that the Annual Meetings provide an opportunity for the international community to demonstrate its support for Morocco and its people, who are once again demonstrating resilience in the face of tragedy” following the earthquake that struck the Al Haouz region, reads this statement by World Bank President Ajay Banga, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah Alaoui.
“Since the devastating earthquake that occurred on September 8 in Morocco, the World Bank and IMF staff have conducted, in close coordination with the Moroccan authorities and a team of experts, an in-depth assessment of Marrakech’s capacity to host the 2023 Annual Meetings,” the same source said.
This assessment, it is indicated, mainly consisted of ensuring that the holding of these Assemblies “does not disrupt essential relief and reconstruction activities and that the security of participants can be ensured”.
“Following a careful examination of the conclusions, the management of the World Bank and the IMF agreed, in agreement with the Moroccan authorities, to maintain the organization of the Annual Meetings in Marrakech, while adapting the content of the event to the circumstances,” added the same source.
This major event will bring together delegates from the 190 member countries of these two international institutions, including leaders from the public sector (central banks, finance and development ministries, parliamentarians) and the private sector, as well as representatives of civil society organizations and experts from academia.
This is the first time in 50 years that these Assemblies have been held on the African continent.
