Bahrain, as the country chairing the League of Arab States, called for de-escalation on the Israeli-Lebanese border and an end to hostilities between the Jewish state and the Shiite Hezbollah movement. This was stated in a statement by the Bahraini Foreign Ministry, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“The Kingdom calls for a ceasefire between the parties to the conflict, joint work to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and the search for a peaceful settlement through negotiations that will save civilian lives and ensure security in the region,” the statement, published on the website of the Foreign Ministry, said.
The ministry also called on the Security Council “to give the fighting on the Israeli-Lebanese border the attention it deserves and to urgently decide on a ceasefire to prevent the conflict from spreading, as it has dangerous implications for regional and international security.”
In mid-June, the Israeli army approved an operational plan for an offensive in Lebanon. Following the operation against the Palestinian radical movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the authorities are counting on simultaneously striking Hezbollah, which, like Hamas, operates against Israel, periodically shelling the territory of the Jewish state from the north.
The last conflict between the Hezbollah militia and the Israeli army took place in the summer of 2006 in southern Lebanon. UN Security Council Resolution 1701 established a ceasefire on the border, which is monitored by 12,000 peacekeepers from 36 countries.
