Solar energy has become the leader in development among renewable energy sources, as reported by Day.Az, CNBC reports.
The rapid growth of solar energy is driven by interest from major technology companies, who are seeking to provide clean energy to the data centers that power the global internet and artificial intelligence applications.
Amazon, Microsoft, Meta Platforms and Google alone have accounted for 40 percent of demand for large-scale solar projects in the U.S. over the past five years. Renewable energy is also supported by its price, which has recently begun to decline.
However, solar energy continues to make up only a small portion of total electricity production and consumption in the United States. In 2023, solar electricity generation accounted for just 3.9 percent of the total. Natural gas-fired power generation accounted for 43 percent of the total. The U.S. Department of Energy projects that solar energy will account for 58 percent of all electricity production in the country in 2024.
