Death of legend Diego Maradona

Buenos Aires – Legendary Argentine soccer player Diego Maradona died Wednesday of cardiac arrest at his home in Tigre, several Argentine media outlets reported.

According to Clarín and La Nación, Maradona, who celebrated his 60th birthday at the end of October, died of cardiac arrest at his home in Tigre, where he had been living since a recent head operation, information also confirmed by his spokesman.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Diego Maradona reigned over world football, notably participating in his Argentina’s victory at the 1986 World Cup and then in the final lost to West Germany four years later. At the same time, at club level, he won several trophies with FC Barcelona and especially with Napoli, which he led to the Italian championship title twice, in 1987 and 1990.

Nicknamed the Pibe de Oro (or golden boy), Diego Maradona also, at the end of his playing career, embraced the career of coach, with contrasting results. He notably led the Albiceleste (the nickname of the Argentinian national team) to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup, suffering a heavy defeat against Germany (4-0).
