Thus, on Sunday, June 30, in the afternoon, the rescuers, observing the beach in Vecāki, with the help of a drone, noticed two persons who were on an inflatable mattress already a good distance behind the swimming area fence, that is, the buoys. The persons were addressed through the drone’s loudspeaker and confirmation was received from them that help was needed.

Rescuers immediately went into the water to help the persons return safely to shore. After a short while, both persons – a man and a woman – were taken into the rescue motorboat and taken to the shore. During the conversation, the man explained that the inflatable mattress was carried into the sea by the current, so he jumped from the mattress into the water and tried to bring the mattress on which the woman was to the shore. Unfortunately, due to the strong current and wind, this did not work at all, and both swimmers were carried further and further from the shore into the sea. Only due to a lucky coincidence, the rescuers got involved in the rescue of the vacationers, because when addressing the two swimmers through the drone and asking if they needed help, the persons raised their hands in accordance with the instructions of the rescuers, thus signaling that help is needed. However, as the man later admitted, he had raised his hand because he thought he was being filmed, rather than offering them help.

On the same day, two young people also experienced a similar situation in Vecāki, who were also blown up behind the buoys on the inflatable mattress. One of the young people was able to get ashore on his own, but the rescuers helped the other to return safely to the shore.

RPP calls on residents not to be presumptuous and when swimming to evaluate both their strength and swimming skills, as well as the direction of the wind, and in no case, not to swim behind the buoys placed in the water for the safety of swimmers.

We remind you that swimming outside the buoys can not only endanger the life of swimmers, but is also an administratively punishable violation for disturbing public order, and the fine for such a violation for a natural person can reach 500 euros. So, for example, a vacationer who had recklessly swam behind the buoys and aggressively denied both the fact of the violation, which was recorded by video cameras, and disputed the work of the police officers, preventing the man’s actions, which posed a potential threat to his life and safety, was fined 70 euros.
