The entire Yangtze River main stream exceeds the warning water level
As the Yangtze River, China’s longest river, reached flood risk levels, more than 240,000 people were evacuated.
According to China’s official Xinhua News Agency on the 3rd, local authorities announced that 991,000 residents were affected and 242,000 were evacuated as of the afternoon of the 2nd due to heavy rain in Anhui Province in eastern China.
By 4:00 p.m. that day, 36 counties and districts in 7 cities in Anhui Province, including Huangshan, Xuancheng, Anqing, Tongling, Chizhou, Liuan, and Wuhu, suffered major damage as wind and rain swept through them.
From 5:00 PM on the 1st, it rained throughout Anhui Province for 24 hours, and heavy rain fell in the northeastern Huaihe River, Jianghuai, and southern Yangtze River. 1,275 places in the province recorded rainfall of more than 50 mm, of which 387 places recorded rainfall of more than 100 mm. The place with the highest rainfall was 266 mm.
As a result, as of 5:00 PM on the 2nd, the entire main stream of the Yangtze River in Anhui Province has exceeded the warning water level and the water level is still rising, and 18 tributaries including Xihe and 6 lakes including Huayang Lake have exceeded the warning water level.
Anhui authorities have stepped up their overall response and urged relevant departments across the province to take preventive measures. As the wind and rain blew in, three cities in Anhui Province, Ma’anshan, Wuhu, and Tongling, raised their flood emergency response level to Level 3, the third highest level, this morning.
Anhui Meteorological Administration forecasted that showers or light rain would fall in various parts of the region until 8 p.m. on the 3rd.
Local authorities also reported that flooding also caused major damage in Pingjiang County and Miluo City in Yueyang City, Hunan Province, central China, with some residential areas at risk of being submerged, landslides, and road and bridge collapses.
The rainfall in Pingjang County reached 759.6mm from the 18th of last month to the 1st of this month, recording the highest amount since meteorological observations began in 1961.
