From July 3, the Bank of Japan will begin issuing the first new banknotes in 20 years featuring three-dimensional portraits of the founders of financial and women’s educational institutions in an attempt to thwart counterfeiters.

As reported by Day.Az, citing Reuters, the banknotes use printed patterns to create holograms of portraits facing different directions depending on the viewing angle, using technology that the National Printing Bureau of Japan says is the world’s first for paper money.

“The new bills feature the faces of those who represent Japanese capitalism, women’s empowerment and technological innovation,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at the event. The Japanese government plans to print about 7.5 billion new bills by the end of the current fiscal year, increasing the number of 18.5 billion bills worth 125 trillion yen in circulation by December 2023, Kishida said.

The banknotes in circulation will be used, but only at train stations, parking lots and fast food cafes.

The government is pushing consumers and businesses to use less cash as part of its strategy to digitalise the economy.

The front of the new 10,000 yen note will feature Eiichi Shibusawa (1840-1931), known as the “father of Japanese capitalism.” He founded Japan’s first joint-stock bank. On the back, the Bank of Japan has decided to print a photo of Tokyo Station.

The 5,000-ruble note features Umeko Tsuda (1864-1929), who was the first Japanese woman to study in the United States. Upon returning to her homeland, she made a major contribution to the development of education among women and founded Tsuda University in the Japanese capital. The back of the note will be decorated with wisteria flowers.

For the thousand-dollar note, the Japanese Ministry of Finance has selected an image of the physician and bacteriologist Shibasaburo Kitasato (1853-1931). The other side of the note will feature the famous woodblock print “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.
