Apple will have to find a Chinese partner to enable artificial intelligence (AI) functions on its smartphones in the region, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.

According to the newspaper’s journalists, Apple Intelligence’s AI functions announced at WWDC 2024 will not fully work in China. Therefore, the company will have to change its artificial intelligence model and find partners in the country who will provide it with their own AI models.

The article says that in China, AI models are strictly regulated so that they cannot be used to “influence public opinion.” Tim Cook’s company will not be able to get permission for Apple Intelligence, so the corporation will have to find a partner. Apple is currently in talks with Baidu, Alibaba Group and Baichuan AI.

According to the WSJ, China has approved 117 generative AI models or tools by mid-2024. However, none of them are products created outside the country. Therefore, the likelihood that Chinese authorities will approve Apple Intelligence remains extremely small.

The Wall Street Journal sources reported back in March that Apple smartphones could integrate with Chinese-developed artificial intelligence. Analysts called the most likely scenario the appearance of a chatbot from Baidu Corporation on the iPhone.
