CORTINA. He is disappointed and disheartened Mayor of Cortina Manfred Mayr after the series of thefts that shook the community of the small village of Bassa Atesina the other night. It all happened between Sunday and Monday, during the Spain – Georgia match. According to the Carabinieri of the Cortaccia station, four attempted thefts and one successful one were reported; coincidentally, the one in the home of the mayor Mayr, in via dei Campi, while he was watching the football match. The thieves entered the mayor’s apartment between 10:15 and 11:00 p.m. They stole cash from his wallet and a pair of jogging pants, while, probably because they were disturbed, the criminals quickly got rid of his new running shoes and a matching t-shirt. Mayr only noticed the theft the next morning at 5:30 when he could no longer find his shorts. It is the second time that the mayor of Cortina has been targeted. The neighboring house was not spared either. Although nothing was stolen, the intruders ransacked the apartment, leaving everything in disarray. In two other cases, the thieves simply stole cash from residents’ wallets.

Particularly brazen in the home of a widow who was woken up at 2 in the morning. The woman got out of bed and surprised a masked young man, dressed in black with a bandana, while he was trying to open the balcony door with a crowbar. With quick wit the woman managed to scare off the intruder. In another house, also in Cortina, a young mother who was breastfeeding her newborn noticed six individuals trying to force the front door. In this case too the woman with courage and determination managed to scare off the criminals.

The attempted thefts and the theft were reported to the Carabinieri of Cortaccia who have started the investigation. It is hoped that the surveillance cameras at the entrances to the town can provide useful information to identify the criminals. The mayor of Cortina explained that the residents are worried about the series of thefts but are determined to prevent other similar episodes through solidarity and mutual vigilance. “We should not be surprised – Manfred Mayr told us – if people are worried. The police are bound by the law that protects thieves and not the owners. If the thieves are not caught red-handed, nothing happens to them, while if the owner reacts in self-defense, he risks having problems with the law.”
