Benin media professionals were at the polls on Sunday June 9 to elect their peers to serve in the next mandate of the High Audiovisual and Communications Authority. The names of those representatives are already known until the official results of the voting are announced.
Press stakeholders voted to send three of their own to sit as advisers to the next HAAC. Lionel Gbegonnoudé for technicians, Armand Hounsou for audiovisual and Basile Tchibozo for the written press. The winners of Sunday’s vote have inspired media professionals across Benin.
The three candidates whose victory must be confirmed by the HAAC, the organizer of the election with the technical support of the CENA, the other six to be nominated by the President of the Republic (three) and the Office of the National Assembly (three) will then be named at the same time. .
Who are the next media representatives at HAAC?
Lionel Gbegonnoudé currently holds the position of Deputy Technical Director, responsible for transmission and multimedia within the Benin Radio and Television Company (SRTB, formerly ORTB). A graduate in computer engineering and digital broadcasting, he enriched his professional career by gaining expertise with various media and institutions, in Benin and abroad.
His professional journey as a sound recordist at national radio began in 2006, when he joined the former ORTB. Over the years, thanks to his commitment and continuous development of his skills, he rose through the ranks to successively manage the Multimedia, IT and Web Editorial Services before being promoted in 2019 to the position of Deputy Director Technical.
Armand Hounsou is the current Vice President of the HAAC; a member of the institution elected in 2019, he was elected to this position in August 2023 to replace the outgoing vice-president. If his victory is confirmed, Armand Hounsou will be the first media professional to be reappointed by his colleagues to the HAAC. modification of the institution’s organic law. Audiovisual editor at ORTB, Armand Hounsou, can boast a rich and varied career between documentary film editing and teaching in Beninese universities. Until he was first elected in 2019 to serve on the HAAC, he was head of the National Television Editing Division, which was responsible for coordinating all editing and post-production work.
Basile Tchibozo is well known in the press sector in Benin. He is the founder and promoter of the daily newspaper Le Challenge, published in Cotonou since 2004. He was very involved with the umbrella bodies of the Beninese press such as the Observatory of Deontology and Ethics in the Media and the National Council of the Press. and Audiovisual Patronage who held positions as training secretary and then as its president.
