Apple explained why the artificial intelligence (AI) functions of Apple Intelligence will be available only on the brand’s new devices. This was reported by the MacRumors publication, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.

Journalist John Gruber spoke about AI with Apple executives John Giannandrea, Greg Joswiak, and Craig Federighi. During the conversation, the company’s representatives explained why the proprietary neural network will only appear in iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max smartphones and laptops and tablets based on the M1 processor or a newer chip.

The company noted that large language models (LLMs) are incredibly computationally intensive. “We could run these models on very old devices, but it would be so slow that it would be useless,” Giannandrea explained the limitations.

According to Joswiak, the limitations are related only to the performance of gadgets. The company’s top manager noted that if Apple wanted to sell as many new devices as possible, it would make AI available only on the newest models of smartphones, computers, and tablets.

At the same time, some AI functions will be added to older smartphones. They will appear in iOS 18, which is supported by the iPhone Xr, released in 2018.
