The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which brings together, on Wednesday July 4, several countries that have tense relations with Western countries, including China and Russia, will call for “Equality of the Multipolar World System”said Vladimir Putin during the opening speech of the meeting.

This world order must be “based on the central role of the United Nations, international law and the commitment of sovereign states to a mutually beneficial partnership”said the Russian president, at the opening of the conference in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

The SCO summit is part of an ongoing diplomatic ballet in this region whose leaders often meet Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is also present.

On Wednesday, Vladimir Putin, in search of relations with Western countries since the invasion of Ukraine, has already confirmed during a meeting with Xi Jinping that the SCO is “has been established as one of the key pillars of the international order involving justice”the two leaders having continued to oppose“Hegemony” of the United States in international relations.

Belarus is a new member of the SCO

The SCO, founded in 2001 but which has grown in recent years, has nine member countries (China, India, Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan). On Thursday, Belarus, Russia’s main ally, became its tenth. The SCO is designed as a competitive cooperation platform for Western countries with an emphasis on security and economy. In a sign of the important development of the organization, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, is also in Astana.

“It is in our power to destroy the walls of the unipolar world, to feed people, to put an end to the many contradictions and conflicts caused by social inequality, lack of food products and resources”confirmed for his part the Belarusian president, Alexander Lukashenko.

If the OCS claims to bring together 40% of the population and approximately 30% of the world’s GDP, the group is diverse and there are many tensions among its members. And if Russia and China appear united against the West, they look for competitors on the economic level in Central Asia, an area rich in hydrocarbons and important for the transport of goods between Europe and Asia.
