Looking good while travelling and in front of the camera: This is only possible for politicians if they have professionals at their side, says Annalena Baerbock.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) has defended her ministry’s spending on a make-up artist against criticism. When you appear on television, you have to wear make-up because of the strong spotlight, said Baerbock at the “Politics on Site” event, to which the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), the NDR and the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” had invited people. “Otherwise you look like a gravedigger because you’re completely grey.”
The minister stressed that her numerous travels left no time to look for a make-up artist locally, especially abroad. “That’s why it’s common practice – not just for me, by the way, but it’s always a popular topic for women,” Baerbock added. She also explained that the Foreign Office adheres to the legal regulations.
Politicians abroad also use the help of make-up professionals. According to a report in the “Tagesspiegel”, Emmanuel Macron is said to have spent 26,000 euros on make-up in just three months in 2017, while his predecessor François Hollande is said to have paid a make-up artist 10,000 euros per month.
