Why do cats like to sit on laptops? The reason may not please you

Unfortunately, no large-scale scientific experiment has yet addressed this question. However, cat behavior experts do have a basic theory that could explain a cat lying on a keyboard.

According to animal psychology expert Dr. David Sands, it’s probably not mimicking human behavior – although recent research suggests that felines can mimic human behavior.

It’s also unlikely that cats are only attracted to the heat your laptop emits. “Yes, laptops give off heat, and warm spaces are attractive to cats. But you have to ask why your cat isn’t sitting, for example, by the radiator,” says D. Sands.

According to an expert in animal psychology, the real reason your cat is drawn to your laptop is its smell – or rather, the smell you regularly leave there.

“You can’t smell it, but a cat can smell you all over the keyboard,” says Sands.

While it’s possible that your cat is sitting on your computer because it’s enjoying the scent, Sands says, another explanation is far more likely: “It’s more likely that your cat wants to sniff her scent and displace your scent.” It’s about ownership – your cat is actually saying, “You belong to me!” by doing this.

“People always think that cats are showing affection by rubbing themselves on you or things you touch. But in reality, cats are very bossy individuals. The more they can rub against you and spread their scent, the better,” adds Sands.

He notes that “dogs were bred to be our companions, and cats are still wild enough.”

“They were mainly bred to fight pests and are not social creatures – they live only for themselves,” – explains the reason for the dominant behavior of cats, an expert in animal psychology.
