The quirky Jan Nepomuk Berwid-Buquoy and his family end up at the Tábor – Měšice castle. The operation of the cultural monument began to be beyond their strength. “It’s not an easy decision. But the enormous energy costs of 2,500 euros (62,500 CZK) per quarter are no longer affordable even for us,” the only daughter of the castle couple wrote on social networks.
Political scientist, columnist and noble descendant Jan Nepomuk Berwid-Buquoy managed the castle with his wife Bärbel Berwidová-Buquoy since the 1990s. The property, which the Communists used as a warehouse for agricultural equipment, was reconstructed and opened to the public. The castle attracted visitors with exhibitions and furniture of famous personalities. The collection of the manor of the castle included, for example, a dining table and sofa by Reinhard Heydrich as well as Art Nouveau beds from 1901 by Jan Masaryk.
According to the daughter, however, the noble couple has been indisposed for a long time and has no one to take care of the castle anymore. “Mom has been in a nursing home in Berlin since 2021, due to advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Dad is 90 percent severely disabled after a stroke. He will be 80 years old and the transport from Berlin to Tábor-Měšice castle is beginning to put a lot of strain on him,” she wrote on social networks. She herself lives with her family in Berlin and works at the Freie Universität Berlin.
“None of us is able to bear the huge expenses for energy and maintenance of a historical building, including traffic difficulties,” she added, adding that the castle is therefore for sale. According to the Poznej domy website, it will cost 35 million crowns.
