The Mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev, closed the competition for the restoration of the Memorial to the fallen soldiers of the First Sofia Infantry Regiment and the Sixth Turnov Infantry Regiment next to the National Palace of Culture. “We will hold a new competition and in it we will include respected urban planners, architects, artists, sculptors, historians, sociologists, professional organizations, citizens’ associations,” Terziev wrote on Facebook.
In May, the project of architectural studio “Gebuplan” was ranked first, headed by arch. Filipa Guguchkova. He envisioned strictly restored to original drawings. Water ponds were laid, in accordance with the architecture of the current fountains. On the back of the memorial walls, there should have been “green stripes” – a visual continuation of the park environment.
“The results of the competition sparked a debate about where and how a new memorial could be built,” the mayor wrote in his decision. The controversy was about the intended restoration of the monument in its authentic form and that the proposals did not have original qualities.
