Canada joins the growing group of non-EU countries that are part of the EU’s research and innovation program Horizon Europe. Through this step, Canadian researchers and organizations will work with their EU counterparts on large-scale projects to address global challenges in key areas, this was announced by the press center of the European Commission.

The EU-Canada agreement is being signed today by Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Iliana Ivanova and Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne.

Commissioner Ivanova stated: “The challenges we face are global, so we must work together to tackle them. I warmly welcome Canada to Horizon Europe. With this step, we are strengthening the EU’s ties with trusted partners who have a solid scientific base and a strong track record in research and innovation. Now we can give our brightest minds the opportunity to come together and work on joint solutions for the future.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the conclusion of negotiations on Canada’s association to Pillar II of Horizon Europe at the EU-Canada Summit on 24 November 2023. Today they welcomed the announcement through a joint statement.

Canada is associated with Horizon Europe Pillar II, which funds collaborative research projects and targets climate, energy, the digital economy and health. Canadian entities can now participate in research consortia at world level and will be able to be funded directly by program, and Canada will contribute to its budget.
