Captain of the French soccer team, Kylian Mbappéconfirmed on Thursday that it is “go to the polls urgently” after the “disastrous results” of the first round of French legislative elections, in which the far right National Rally party (RN) finished in front.
In the same way as it was done before the voting in the first round, the forward of the French team and Real Madrid asked for a vote again against the far right and encouraged his colleagues to choose an alternative to the choice of Marine Le Pen’s party.
“More than ever, we must vote. It is very urgent. We cannot leave the country in the hands of these people, it is very necessary. “We’ve seen the results, it’s devastating,” said the attacker, who is in Germany, where France will face Portugal on Friday in the quarter-finals of the Euro Cup.
Le Pen’s party has achieved good results in the first round of a quick election, with a 33% of the votes at the national level. Sunday sees the second round of legislative elections, in which Marine Le Pen’s party could come to power.
Mbappé was speaking ahead of France’s match against Portugal in the Eurocup quarter-finals which will be played on Friday in Hamburg.
The player made a similar call earlier at Euro 2024, when he said that “The extremes are knocking at the door of power.”
Now, there was urgency in his feelings.
“We hope that this will change,” he said of the election results, “that everyone will come together to vote and vote for the right party.”
President Emmanuel Macron called elections soon after the chase suffered by the National Rally in the European Parliament elections last month, bet that the right would not succeed much again in a national election. The plan backfired and Le Pen’s rivals are now desperately trying to prevent the National Rally from winning a clear majority in Sunday’s runoff.
France’s players were regularly asked questions about the political situation in their country during the Euro 2024 press conference.
Ousmane Dembélé said that “The alarm sounded” and his fellow striker Marcus Thuram went further to say that the French must “fight daily so that the National Rally does not win.”
The National Rally is the party with a history of racism and xenophobia.
The French soccer team, which won Euro 2000 two years after lifting its first World Cup trophy in Paris, has been hailed as a model of diversity and unity. The “Black, Blanc, Beur” player combination was an echo of the French tricolor blue, white and red flag.
