“The municipality appealed to the police to start a pre-trial investigation in accordance with the articles of the Criminal Code regarding self-governance and violation of public order,” according to the written comment of the municipality’s representative Gabrielias Grubinskas to Elta.

In addition, the municipality also submitted a claim to the National Unification Party regarding the damage caused. According to G. Grubinskas, the municipality estimated the losses from removing the illegally hung board at 353.44 euros.

According to the appeal of the Lithuanian Court of Appeal, the damage caused to the courthouse at that time will still be assessed by the Department of Cultural Heritage, which manages the building.

ELTA reminds that at the end of June, on the eve of the June Uprising of 1941, the National Unification initiative hung a memorial plaque of the ambiguously regarded colonel Kazis Škirpa, which was not agreed with the municipality, on the Court of Appeal in Vilnius.

A few days later, Grinda employees hung the board, but they needed the help of the police. When several dozen protesters stood up to defend the general’s memorial, the officers had to pull them away from the memorial by force. When the board was hung up, some of the people gathered near the courthouse did not listen to the demands of the police, so several people were arrested.

As Kamilė Šeraitė-Gogelienė, a member of the Vilnius Municipality Council, said to Eltai, K. Škirpa’s memorial plaque incited hatred in the society. According to the politician, the Commission of Historical Memory has applied to the Genocide and Resistance Research Center (LGGRTC) regarding the evaluation of K. Škirpa’s personality, but they have not yet received the results.

The previously presented conclusions of the LGGRTC regarding K. Škirpa assess his important contribution in opposing the Soviet occupation regime, but emphasize that in 1940-1941, his activities “also contained manifestations of anti-Semitism”.
