Melanie Müller is due to appear in court on charges of giving the Hitler salute. The trial was cancelled due to illness. The singer has now commented on the matter.
After her trial for the Hitler salute accusations was cancelled at short notice due to illness, pop singer Melanie Müller has spoken out about the background. “I am not unfit to stand trial, I am simply unfit to travel,” the 36-year-old told the RTL television station. Her doctor had advised her not to fly because she could have problems with the pressure equalization in the plane due to various illnesses.
She had suffered a stroke in the vestibular system in her right ear several months ago. “It’s still affecting me a bit and I’ve also had a slight cold for several weeks,” said Müller.
The trial against Müller at the Leipzig District Court was supposed to have started on Tuesday. However, she had called in sick. According to an RTL report, the singer appeared in a club in Mallorca on Monday evening – the evening before the cancelled trial. “The court knows what illness she has and has therefore excused her,” Stefan Blaschke, press spokesman for the district court, told the TV station.
Müller is accused of using symbols of unconstitutional organizations. She is said to have given the Hitler salute to the audience several times from the stage at an event in Leipzig in September 2022. There is also an allegation of drug possession. According to the indictment, Müller is said to have kept 0.69 grams of cocaine mixture and an ecstasy tablet in her apartment in Leipzig last August.
Müller had rejected the accusations and any proximity to “right-wing radicals or nationalist ideology”. The gesture in question was a move to inflame the audience, she had stressed. The singer is presumed innocent until a final conviction.
