“I asked the president to look into the possibility of an immediate ceasefire” that would be “time-limited and allow the speeding up of peace talks,” said Orban, the only European Union leader who would maintain close ties with the Kremlin after Russia. invasion of Ukraine.
Orban, whose country assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union for a period of six months, starting from July 1, considered that the “initiatives” of the President of Ukraine take a lot of time and are slow and complicated due to the rules of international diplomacy.
He also said that the talks with Zelensky were “in the way of truth”, saying, “I will certainly inform the Council of the European Union about the content of those talks in order to make the necessary European decisions.”
The Ukrainian president did not respond to Orban’s suggestion during a press conference, but later announced that he had asked his guest to “participate” in Ukraine’s peace efforts.
Zelensky said in his daily statement, “I asked Hungary and Prime Minister Orban to participate in the efforts made” to organize a summit for peace in Ukraine, so that was considered a de facto rejection this is for the application.
Previously Zelensky strongly refused to reach a ceasefire with Russia, assuming that Moscow would use it to strengthen its army.
