His talent for painting came Frederic almost born in the cradle: like his godfather Karl Wallner the rescued Poitou donkey feels drawn to the brush and the easel. His artistic talent was discovered only by chance. “He always liked to carry wooden sticks around and scratch in the sand,” he recalls Gabriele Wodak. The animal rights activist runs the sanctuary Wolfwith Frederic found a safe house a few years ago.
But how did the idea of putting paint and canvas on a donkey come about? “To keep our animals from getting bored, we try to keep them busy with tasks that suit their behavior,” says Wodak. Frederik made his first attempts at drawing with a willow stick on baking paper. “We figured it out for him and encouraged him with a reward,” he said Wodak.
This strategy seems to have paid off. Although at first the artist only put a few dots on paper on four claws, today he draws continuous lines and abstract shapes. In addition to the cuddly artist, there are 15 other donkeys and eight horses living in the shelter for animals in need, who have also been tested for their creative talent. However, their interests seem to lie in other areas.
Charity Event
Meanwhile comes Fredericks Talent benefits people in emergency situations. Already in 2021, some of his paintings were sold for a good cause. Recently the donkey appeared again for a charity project, but this time not alone. Together with the Father Karl Wallner The four-legged friend created a painting that will be auctioned in the near future. The money goes to the “Licht ins Dunkel” donation fund.
