You may be eligible for a disability check without knowing it. Launched in 2018, this state aid allows 5.6 million families (among the poorest) to pay part of their energy bills. It is usually sent automatically, in April, to the mailboxes of beneficiaries. But this year, many of them were unable to get it, due to a management bug.

Wait a month or two to get it
If the online process takes a few minutes – between 10 and 15 depending on the site – on the control side, it’s another story. Because the requirements to be improved promise to be numerous. There are over a million of them, according to user groups that identified the problem last February.
Indeed, until now the allocation of the envelope is made on the basis of the crossing of two documents: the last known income tax (of 2022 this year) and the house tax. But since the latter was abolished in 2023 for the first residences, the administration is not able to rely on a valid file to identify the benefits of the power check.
However, between 2022 and 2023, up to one million families are able to meet the requirements allowing them to benefit from the program for the first time. These can be young people who have just entered working life, households that experience a decrease in income between 2021 and 2022, or those who were born in 2022. So they are among those who are forgotten this year.
The cost of the power check varies from 48 euros to 277 euros. Families who apply online will receive it “within a maximum of one month,” the Ministry of Commerce said. It will take more patience for those who start the process by post: about two months “after receiving the complete request”. Knowing that this deadline can be extended due to many complaints, specify the ministry.
This big hiccup will, however, have an unexpected good side: another million houses that, because they do not comply with the selection criteria, should not receive the inspection in 2024, have the pleasant surprise of receiving it still in their mailbox . Bercy declared in this way that no compensation would be asked of them. The additional cost was estimated in February: “Probably around 100 million euros extra, for a general energy audit budget of 900 million euros per year. »
