Children’s boots sold at a Chinese online shopping mall were found to contain carcinogens at levels 680 times higher than the standard.

On the 4th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the results of a safety test on 12 products, including children’s boots, hats, and bags sold on AliExpress, Temu, and Shein. Six products sold on AliExpress and Shein were found to contain hazardous substances exceeding domestic standards.

Phthalate plasticizers (DEHP, DBP) were detected in children’s boots sold at Shein. Plasticizers are added to polymers such as plastics to increase flexibility and processability. They are known to have adverse effects on reproductive functions such as sperm count reduction, infertility, and premature birth. Plasticizers were detected in the ribbon decoration area of these boots at approximately 682 times the standard, and in the outer surface and edges at 483 and 44 times the standard, respectively.

Two bags sold on AliExpress also contained hazardous substances exceeding domestic standards. The pH of the outer fabric of a children’s backpack was 9.4, exceeding the domestic standard (4.0–7.5). If the pH of a textile product exceeds the standard and is strongly acidic or alkaline, it can cause skin irritation and allergic contact dermatitis. In the printed area on the outer surface of the backpack, four types of phthalate plasticizers were detected at approximately 11 times the standard. In another children’s bag, formaldehyde was detected at approximately twice the standard in the lining. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen that causes sick house syndrome and can cause breathing difficulties, headaches, etc.

The infant clothing products sold by Temu were deemed unsuitable because they exceeded the standard of ‘7.5cm or less from the fixed point’ for shoulder strap length. If these straps are too long, they can get caught in door gaps or obstacles and cause injuries to children.
