Anseong City (Mayor Kim Bo-ra) announced that it will promote the “Project to Activate Separation and Disposal of Waste Vinyl by Expanding Recyclable Resources” starting July 1st in order to reduce waste vinyl discarded in volume-based garbage bags.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, the use of vinyl has been increasing due to the increase in the use of delivery food and single-person and two-person households. Although waste vinyl is a recyclable resource, it has been disposed of in volume-based garbage bags and tends to be incinerated due to the lack of awareness that it is a recyclable resource in households and commercial facilities.
According to the results of the survey on the status of household waste in Anseong City, the content of vinyl in incineration volume-based waste bags is expected to increase to 15.2% in 2022 and 16.5% in 2023.
Accordingly, Anseong City is moving to separate and recycle waste plastics thrown in volume-based bags as much as possible. The items for waste plastic separation have also been expanded to include all plastics such as snack and coffee packaging plastics, general plastic bags and cushioning materials, thermal and cold packs, fruit packaging materials, and plastic strings. Even if waste plastics are small and contaminated with foreign substances, they can still be recycled, so empty the contents, and waste plastics heavily contaminated with food should be rinsed with water to remove foreign substances before separation and disposal.
The city is strengthening the management of waste plastic separation by selecting commercial areas such as restaurants and convenience stores as priority areas for waste plastic separation. 40,000 50L waste plastic separation bags (4 per business) will be provided to businesses that generate large amounts of waste plastic. In stores, waste plastic that was previously disposed of in volume-based waste plastic bags can be collected and disposed of separately in the dedicated bags. The dedicated waste plastic separation bags will be distributed to stores starting in August. If there are no dedicated bags, separate waste plastic can be disposed of in transparent or semi-transparent general plastic bags.
In addition, the city will operate ‘Waste Plastic Separation Disposal Promotion Agents’ to closely publicize and educate citizens. Promotion agents will visit businesses that produce large quantities of waste in commercial areas to check the status of separation and disposal and provide guidance on disposal methods. In particular, they plan to focus on educating store owners and building managers on waste plastic separation and disposal methods.
Anseong Mayor Kim Bo-ra said, “Waste plastic that is carelessly thrown away in volume-based garbage bags is incinerated as trash, but if waste plastic is collected separately and disposed of in regular garbage bags, it can be utilized as a recyclable resource.” She added, “I ask for the interest and cooperation of citizens so that discarded waste plastic can be separated and disposed of.”
