The kick-off ceremony coupled with the awarding of the 12 finalists of the international stage of the “Huawei ICT Competition 2023-2024” took place on 1is July in Yaoundé. It allowed to formally formalize the departure of these students for Essaouira, where they will take courses from July 2 to 10, in the presence of several other students from North, West and Central Africa.
A very well-attended ceremony which saw the participation of several high-flying personalities. the Representative of the Prime Minister, Head of Government, the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, the Representative of the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, the Representative of the Minister of Secondary Education, the Director General of CAMTEL, but also the Heads of partner establishments of Huawei ICT Academy in Cameroon, namely the Rector of the University of Yaoundé I, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buea and the Directors of ENSPY, ENSPD, SUP’PTIC and CUIB, who responded to this Huawei initiative.
In his speech, the Deputy Director General of Huawei CEMAC zone, Mr. Léo KONG declared, “For 9 years, Huawei has placed training at the heart of digital development in Cameroon. We are very happy to organize skills transfer training every year for Cameroonian youth passionate about ICT. We want to support these talents by providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to become true ambassadors of digitalization in Cameroon.”.
Huawei’s Seeds for the Future initiative aims to strengthen the technological capabilities of young talents and promote digitalization across the African continent. As for students heading to Morocco, they will be entitled to training sessions in artificial intelligence, 5G, cloud computing, and digital power, delivered by Huawei digital experts.
Present at this official ceremony, the Secretary General of MINESUP, Professor Wilfred Nyongbet Gabsa, welcomed this initiative by Huawei “The People’s Republic of China has demonstrated through this program since 2016, that they are a true friend of Cameroon through several programs (…) We can only say thank you to Huawei because they continue to encourage young people in this field. (…) we encourage these young Cameroonians who have shown their skills and hope that the other steps that will follow will be another success that we will celebrate with Huawei sooner or later”.
Also guest of honor at this celebration, the Director of SUP’PTIC indicated that “It is a source of pride for Cameroon and for Africa. Our cooperation with Huawei is working well. Huawei is transferring technology to us, we are now competing with the world. We are waiting for our brave students to return with the prizes again, the best ones.”and went on to add that “Cooperation will be intensified between Huawei and partner institutions. The company will certainly change its cooperation program for the next five years, we want as many students as possible to share this experience with Huawei.”.
During the said start-up ceremony, Seeds for the Future 2024 in Morocco “, Huawei also rewarded students who stood out during the 8th edition of its famous ICT tournament “Huawei ICT Competition”, the final of which took place on May 26, 2024 in China, which resulted in the victory of the Network track and Cloud track team from Cameroon. These brilliant students all come from partner institutions of « Huawei ICT Academy » in Cameroon.
The Cameroon team “ Network tracK » 2023-2024 edition obtained the 1is prize on the international stage in China on May 26, 2024 in front of more than 160 teams composed of more than 470 participants from 49 countries and the “Cloud Track” team from Cameroon obtained the 3th prix.
