Mr. Bassirou swore before the Senegalese Constitutional Council to defend “the integrity of the territory and national independence” and to spare no effort to achieve African unity.
“Before God and the Senegalese Nation, I swear to faithfully fulfill the office of President of the Republic of Senegal, to observe and to ensure scrupulously observed the provisions of the Constitution and the laws,” declared Mr. Faye, his right hand raised, in front of hundreds of Senegalese officials and several heads of state and African leaders during a ceremony organized at the exhibition center of the new city of Diamniadio, near Dakar.
His Majesty King Mohammed VI was represented at this ceremony of delivery and installation of the new president of Senegal, by the Head of Government, Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, who was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita.
The swearing-in and installation ceremony of the new Senegalese president took place in the presence of several Heads of State and presidents of the commissions of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).
Mr Faye becomes, at 44, the fifth and youngest president of Senegal since its independence in 1960. He succeeds Macky Sall, who led the country of 18 million people for 12 years, for a five-year term.
In his inauguration speech, Bassirou Diomaye Faye notably advocated “more solidarity” between African countries “in the face of security challenges”.
On the African level, the scale of the security challenges (…) requires us to show more solidarity,” he stressed. “I reaffirm Senegal’s commitment to strengthening efforts for peace, security, stability and African integration,” he said.
After taking the oath, the Grand Chancellor of the National Order had him wear around his neck the grand collar of the grand mastery of the national order.
The transfer of power between Messrs. Sall and Faye will take place in the afternoon at the presidential palace in Dakar.
Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye won the presidential election of March 24 in the first round with 54.28% of the vote, far ahead of candidate Amadou Ba (35.79%).
